Why Does God Allow Bad Things to Happen?

Digg digg it | Reddit reddit | del.icio.us del.icio.us | StumbleUpon StumbleUpon
The one question I have been asked many times goes something like this: "... if God loves us so much, why does He allow such awful things to happen? Earthquakes, tidal waves, other natural disasters, children stricken with terrible diseases, war, crime, the bad economy ..." the list goes on.

Although we are all children of God, He loves us as responsible adults, not as children. If we were loved as children, God could treat us the way a good parent does, swooping in to solve problems and teaching us how to deal with them when we grow up.

As adults we are responsible, however, and God gives us the choice of what our lives are like. If we say we want to struggle and suffer, God does not step in and make changes so our lives will be easier. He allows us to learn in whichever way we choose. We are responsible for creating our own safety, our own happiness - and God is right there to help us do it, but He wouldn't deny us the choice to make of our lives what we will. Responsibility for our lives is a gift!
